There is something very refreshing and rewarding about shooting landscape photography. It allows you to escape the busyness of life and places you right into the bliss of natures stillness. Whether you’re surrounded by jagged mountains, barren deserts, or coastal forests, there is an infinite amount of beauty that is yours to capture.

Like most things, shooting landscapes requires patience and persistence. You will have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone, try new things and stay consistent. If you’re unsure where to begin, we’ve put together a simple list of tips to help you transform your images.

#1. Shift Your Focus

It has become the norm to look at the world from eye level. Try mixing things up by shifting your focus; reach higher grounds for a ‘birds-eye view’ or put more emphasis on the foreground by simply setting your camera lower.

Remember, subtle changes can make a drastic difference to the overall look of your image

#2. Time Of Day

“Golden Hour”, this is what photographers consider to be the very best time of the day to go out and shoot landscapes.

As the sun is setting, the light begins to grow softer and won’t appear as harsh in your images. Colors will appear more vibrant and contrast will be greater. A simple change in light can create a dramatic effect, making it the perfect time to get creative with shadows, silhouettes, and angles.

#3. Perspective

By adding a person or other elements into your landscape shot, it provides a better perspective for the viewer.

This approach clearly translates the dynamic and scale of the landscape setting in comparison to the person. The addition to your landscape photography also adds a visually interesting component to the overall image.

#4. Long Exposure

This technique allows for motion to come alive in your images and is a great way to get creative with your landscape photography.

Moving water (waterfalls, beach shores, etc.) is amongst one of the most common subjects used with this technique. To achieve this effect, you will need a tripod (to avoid blurry images), and to slow down your shutter speed down somewhere between 5 to 30 seconds.

#5. Capture The Stars

Capturing the stars in the night sky, or “Astrophotography” provides a visually stunning element to your landscape shots.

You will need a tripod, your F-Stop wide open and to bump up your ISO as much as you’re able without introducing noise (this tends to range from 1600 – 3200.) Try playing around with different shutter speeds, as this will show the difference in star trails and offer different effects. Shoot on nights when the sky is clear, and avoid being near any city lights; this eliminates any possibility of unwanted haze in your shots.
