ArtisanHD's Printing FAQ
Can you create digital prints on acrylic?Artisan HD can take your photos and create digital prints on acrylic that will astound you. When we print to acrylic, your photos, or artwork become vivid, striking fine art pieces that you can hang in your home or office.
We offer two types of acrylic finishes; printing directly on a ¼" acrylic offered with 1" stainless steel stand offs, and photo paper mounted to 1/8" acrylic finished with a museum back.
What is the aesthetic look of acrylic mounted photos?Professional acrylic printing lends a very contemporary look to the final product. It brings the fine art of photography to a whole new level of modern art. We frequently recommend acrylic mounted photos for displaying modern works of fine art and photography.
What are some other reasons to custom print to acrylic? There are several reasons why digital prints on acrylic are a wonderful alternative to printing on regular photographic paper or other mediums.
Not only are custom acrylic prints great for hanging in your home or office but they make spectacular personal gifts.
Acrylic printing has a lustrous glossy finish, which not only adds to the contemporary look, but also brings out a depth and clarity to your photos that are incomparable.
Specially treated, this professional process ensures that your photos will last a lifetime.
The mounting process we use also protects your photos from humidity and sunlight, (although you should be careful not to expose them to direct sunlight or high humid conditions).
Do you use face mounting to mount your acrylics? We use face mounting, also called second surface mounting, instead of other mounting processes, as this method is superior for ensuring longevity and for giving a professional finished look to acrylic prints. Although it is a delicate process and requires time and a great deal of professional experience, we feel it gives the final product an almost three-dimensional museum-quality result that is difficult to surpass. The glass also protects the photo from fading, dust, and scratches.
With face mounting, we apply a special silicone glue archival crystal clear film adhesive to the print and then mount the front of the acrylic photo to it. The bond between the UV-resistant glass and the photo is airtight. Because of the airtight bond, there is no light reflection between the glass and the photo. It adds depth and makes the photo look like it is part of the acrylic. When paired with our Metallic or FujiFlex photo paper it creates a look that has to been seen to be believed. This ensures that vivid colors achieved by the acrylic printing process are not compromised.
We then attach the wooden museum backing to the print. The backing creates a 1" space between picture and wall, which makes it appear as if it is floating away from the wall and gives additional dimension to the photo.
Is special hardware required to hang my acrylic print?Even those out there who are all thumbs can hang our acrylic prints. All you need is a hammer and nail. Just watch out for that thumb(s).
Can Artisan HD print to plexi? For photography enthusiasts and artists like, Artisan HD can take your amateur or professional photos and artwork and print to plexi using a special direct printing method. Printing to plexi produces professional glass reprints you will be proud to hang in your home, office, or even an art gallery.
Not many people think of plexi as a medium for significant artistic designs. Yet, it is becoming more and more popular to custom print digital prints on plexi.
What is "plexi"?Plexi is a type of acrylic that we chose to use because of the superior results it gives when we print to this medium. Because of our high standards, we insist on using only the best plexi products available. It is a wonderful alternative to printing on canvas giving equally qualitative but completely different results.
How do you mount plexi photos?Mounting plexi photos is an art form in itself. We use "face mounting," a labor-intensive method that requires an experienced professional to do it perfectly. It is one of the most impressive ways to display your photos and this method is often used in art galleries and museums around the world.
The face mounting process involves sandwiching your photo in between a piece of plexiglass and an appropriate backing. We place the image face down on a piece of glass, which we coat with a special adhesive. We have to be very careful that no dust particles or air bubbles get trapped between the piece of plexiglass and the backing.
We do this type of mounting in a special environment to make sure that not even one speck of dust or one tiny air bubble mars your finished work.
Do you outsource any part of the print to plexi process? We never outsource any part of our print to plexi process. Printing to plexi requires a lot of high tech resources and skill, and we have both. We keep an eagle eye on every step of the process - from scanning your photo into a high resolution digital file, to printing your photo on the highest quality medium, to the printing and mounting processes, and finally to packing it with great care for shipping. Your custom order stays with us all the way.
What is required to take care of my plexi mounted photos?Keep your digital prints on plexi away from any environment that has excessive moisture or heat. Also, to prevent fading, do not place your photos in direct sunlight. You might even want to move your photos from place to place within a room or house to ensure that no one print receives too much sunlight.
You can dust your photos with a feather duster or a lint-free damp cloth. Acrylic glass surfaces can be easily scratched so be very gentle when you clean them.
What are the types of plexi prints, direct and paper mounted? We offer two types of plexiglass prints. First, our most popular plexi print is 'Direct to Plexi'. For this print type, we print your photo directly to the back of 1/4" plexiglass, without paper. This option includes a 2" border and stainless steel standoffs. We also offer a plexiglass print solution where you first choose your high definition paper, then we mount the paper to the back of the a 1/4" piece of plexi. This option covers 100% of the plexi.
How easy is it to mount plexiglass prints using the direct printing process of face mounting? When you mount to plexiglass, (one of the substrates we use), you can run into a lot of trouble if you don't know what you are doing. We have to be very careful when we mount to plexiglass.
Face mounting is complex and time-consuming. It also takes patience and meticulousness.
We take your reprinted digital photo and place it behind a piece of pre-treated plexiglass (a double-sided adhesive is applied to it). Then we very carefully place the front of the printed glass image down on the plexiglass while ensuring that no dust or lint comes between the reprint and the plexiglass.
We must also be sure that when we place the reprint behind the plexiglass that we don't allow any air bubbles to form. The final step, much easier in comparison to the former, is to back the print with the backing you choose.
What is the meaning of "substrate"?Substrate refers to the kind of surface upon which a print is mounted. In the case of face mounting plexiglass prints, the substrate is plexiglass. Substrates are used by professional artists, galleries, museums, framing shops, and specialized printers to enhance the artistry and uniqueness of a photo or fine art piece.
How would you compare plexiglass prints to canvas prints from Artisan HD?In terms of quality, when you upload your digital photos, you will get the same high quality reprints. Both are the result of a direct printing process using large format inject printers. However, the finished products look quite different from each other.
Our custom plexiglass printing produces a sleek, shiny, modern glass reprint. With its crisp, clean edges, it would be at home in a modern art or photography gallery.
No matter which process you use, your personalized print is a treasure forever.
When a print is mounted to Plexiglass, is there some kind of backing bonded to the print, or is the museum mount bonded directly to the back of the print? The museum mount is adhered directly to the back of the print. If you would like an additional backing added before the museum mounting (we call this encapsulation), please contact us directly at (877) 948-0009, and we will gladly create a custom quote for you.
What are canvas prints and what process is used to create them?Canvas prints are photographs reprinted on a canvas surface. Artisan HD (High Definition) uses the highest quality of artist-grade canvas and inkjet printers to reproduce custom canvas prints of your photo. Using our high definition processing, we can turn your photo into a work of art.
Canvas prints are a beautiful alternative or addition to any room, big or small, in your home, or in your office. Much more durable than paper, canvas prints give depth and quality to a photograph that is incomparable.
With our large format printers, we can take your digital photograph and turn it into a gorgeous high definition art canvas, and using our giclée method, we can deliver museum quality reprints -- as big or as small as you wish to cover the wall space you want to fill.
How do I select the finish on my canvas print? When you place your order online for personalized digital photographs for canvas photo prints reproduction, you have a choice of how the canvas will be finished.
Stretched canvas prints are stretched to fit over a 1.5" deep wood frame or "stretcher bar". If you want your prints framed afterwards, you will want to order simply the canvas print. That way you can buy a frame that you feel accentuates and enhances your digital canvas print.
However, if you want your custom canvas prints to stand alone unframed, you will want a gallery-wrapped canvas. Gallery-wrapped canvases are mounted in such a way as to give your photograph a more three-dimensional artistic quality. Some photo subjects look better gallery-wrapped than do others. Large natural landscapes or photos of a flower are good examples of when to choose gallery-wrapped canvas because the mounting process adds to the effect of a story artfully continued.
Our experienced staff will wrap the canvas around all of the edges of a wooden frame and secure the canvas in the back. When complete, the canvas has a totally finished look. No frame is needed and it's ready for hanging.
Once you see the extraordinary results Artisan HD produces, you will never look at your camera the same way. You will find yourself choosing subjects for an end result you never believed possible.
How long will my photo to canvas reproductions last? When we print photo to canvas, we use the highest quality canvas available as well as the highest quality inks. On our large format digital printers, we use high definition technology and fine art giclée printing processes that are second to none.
When we print canvas photos for your order, you can be assured that the reproductions you receive will last for more than a hundred years if kept out of direct sunlight under normal indoor conditions.
Do you take online custom orders for photo to canvas reprints?Artisan HD will gladly accept a custom order online for a photo to canvas print and will do everything possible to respond to your needs. If you do not see a size you need or want, we will be happy to work with you to get your digital photo onto canvas. Normally, we can reduce or enlarge any photo to the size of your choice.
When we print canvas photos, we also offer personalized custom choices such as matte or glossy finishes for your canvas reprint. Just tell us your preferences and we will transfer your photo into a masterpiece.
For customized orders, our customer service will make certain that all of your questions are answered.
What are some of the uses of digital photo to canvas prints?Digital canvas photo reprints have a variety of uses, from interior design in your home and/or office, to reproducing your artwork onto canvas for sale. Canvas photos also make unique custom-made gifts for someone special or for a special occasion.
I would like you to enlarge my photo to cover a large wall area the length of my sofa. Will resolution be lost with such a large canvas reprint using your high definition technology? With the flexibility our technology provides, we can enlarge a photo to canvas to fit over a large area without any loss of resolution. If we find that the photo you upload will not produce the finest results, we will contact you.
We know you will be amazed at what a difference our high definition technology makes. The clarity, the colors, and the resolution are stunning.
Other digital printing companies that offer cheap canvas reprints or prices at a discount do not have the technical capacity to create reproductions in high definition. That is why Artisan HD stands far above the rest.
Do I need to do anything special to care for my canvas reprints?Because our photo to canvas printing process includes a sealant and a UV-protective coating, there is nothing special you need to do to care for your photo to canvas reprints. (The same cannot be said for cheap canvas printing repros.) Our canvas printing creations only require a little bit of dusting with a feather duster or a soft dry towel.
You do need to keep your canvas reprints indoors and away from direct sunlight at normal room temperatures.
What kind of quality should I expect when I have my photo reprinted on canvas?Artisan HD canvas reprints are skillfully reproduced. By using high quality canvas and giclée and our state-of-the-art high definition technology, you will know by your reprints that you did not send your prints to a cheap, discount printing mill. We guarantee you will be delighted with the professional quality of our work.
Do You Offer High Definition Canvas Prints? We offer the best high definition canvas prints you can find. Our high definition giclée prints have stunning color and unbelievably high-resolution detail. Photography is my personal hobby. Is printing photos on canvas a viable alternative for my work?It is becoming more and more popular for amateur and professional photographers to print photos on canvas rather than on photographic paper for a number of reasons.
Because Artisan HD has large format printers, you have a huge variety of different sizes from which to choose. You can have your photos enlarged or reduced to practically any size you desire.
When you put digital photos on canvas, your reprints obtain a quality that is hard to surpass. Because of the natural texture of canvas, printing photos on canvas gives depth, breadth, and artistry to your work.
With our giclée printing process, your photos will look like fine art prints and not cheap reproductions. Once you see the results, you will feel you have purchased your own personal art collection to put in your home or office.
Digital photos on canvas are very durable and last longer than photographic paper.
We use high quality scratch resistant inks that not only add to the beauty of your photograph, but also help increase the lifetime of your personalized prints.
Whether you choose a matte or glossy finish, our printing process brings out the best colors imaginable.
Even when enlarged to fit a very large wall area, there is no reduction in quality, unlike other companies who use cheap quality canvas and inferior printers and uncured inks.
You can give a personalized canvas of your work for a unique and special gift.
In addition, we print photos on canvas in high definition!
Do I have to stretch the canvas myself for mounting? You never have to worry about stretching a canvas yourself unless you want to do it yourself. Most people want us to do it.
Unless you choose otherwise, we professionally stretch your photos on canvas over a 1.5" wooden frame. You can choose to have a plain stretched canvas so that you can frame it yourself, or you can choose a gallery wrapped canvas, a process that requires no frame. With this type of mounting, we wrap the photograph around the edges of all four sides of the frame giving it a totally finished look.
We guarantee that letting us print your photos on canvas will go beyond your expectations. Added to that, our personalized service will never let you down.
How do I choose an online professional company that offers digital photos on canvas? Many online professional printing companies offer digital photos on canvas so you want to be sure that you obtain the services of one with experience, a well-known reputation of high quality results, and personalized customer service.
With the advent of large format printers, printing digital photos on canvas has become very popular and affordable. However, the quality of the canvas reprints varies enormously.
You may have to do a little research before you find the company you want to upload your photo to, but here are a few tips to help you separate the professional online printing companies from the cheap, discount printer factories.
To print digital photos to canvas and deliver high quality results, the company should have the best and most technologically advanced inkjet printers available.
When a true professional is printing digital photos on canvas, high quality canvas is essential. If you decide to upload your photos to a company with cheap prices, you will probably get a poor canvas reprint. The total effect will be much less pleasing than with the superior poly-cotton canvases we use.
To print digital photos to canvas you want sharp, crystal clear reprints. This requires the use of the finest inks in the market. The ink used should be the ink specifically manufactured for the specific printer used. Other ink brands may be available for a particular printer, but only the manufacturer's ink can be trusted to produce high quality canvas reproductions.
When comparing prices, don't go the cheap way unless you want substandard results. Besides, printing digital photos on canvas with an established company is absolutely affordable. When you upload your photographs online with the professionals, you can be sure you will get a gorgeous result.
If you have questions, make sure the company has a way for you to contact them, and research what types of personalized customer service they provide. Do they have a customer guarantee for full satisfaction?
Digital photos on canvas should be finished with a UV-protective coating that will protect the canvas from fading and scratching. - Same question; Are we making this a part of our workflow?
Make sure that when they print digital photos to canvas, they allow for previews of the reprints before purchase.
When printing digital photos on canvas, the company should offer you a completely finished product, including finish and mounting options.
The printing process used is very important for optimum resolution. If their printing process is giclée or high definition, you're in good hands.
You should be happy to know that Artisan HD meets all of these standards.
What format do you require to upload photos online for canvas printing? You can upload any TIF, JPEG or PNG file for photo to canvas printing as long as the file does not exceed 1 gigabyte (which is quite a lot of memory for one photo!).
Just to give you a perspective on size, one 10-megapixel JPEG image will average about 4.5 megabytes. There are 1000 megabytes in a gigabyte.
direct to board
What is direct to board printing?Direct to board printing is a specialized hi-tech printing process where an image is printed directly on a solid rigid medium, like wood, plastic, or metal (tin, steel, and aluminum) instead of on vinyl, photo paper, or canvas.
Direct to board prints produced by Artisan HD are made using our Océ 350 GT UV curable print process. The results are indoor and outdoor hard surface prints that are incredibly durable and boldly colorful. These wood, metal, and plastic display graphics do not even require any lamination or extra finish.
In addition, the process is environmentally friendly. There are no VOCs polluting the air. This process not only results in superior display graphics, but it takes care of our workers and our environment.
Why can direct to board prints be used in both indoor and outdoor environments?Direct to board prints, also known as hard surface prints, are suitable in both indoor and outdoor environments because of the process used to create them. The key is the UV curing ink applied to the rigid surface using our high definition large format inkjet printer. Using powerful UV light, the printer then cures the ink.
This curing process offers incredible durability, which is why hard surface prints are suitable for outdoor display without any protective coating.
Do direct to board prints require mounting?Direct to board printing eliminates the need for mounting because this process creates excellent borderless results.
What are some uses of direct to board prints?Direct to board prints can be used in a variety of creative ways. You can print your favorite photos, artwork, or design using this method, and hang them in your home or office. It's a wonderfully unconventional way to display graphics. A few ideas for application and uses are:
Doors (making them incredibly interesting)
Conference room tabletops and other types of tabletops

How does high definition translate into large format prints in HD?In order to explain how high definition translates into large format prints in HD, it is important to understand its meaning.
In the world of digital photography and printing, resolution determines quality. In digital photography pixels, itty-bitty squares make up the photo image we see. The more pixels a camera has, the more image information it can receive. Therefore, these higher numbered pixel cameras produce higher resolution (clear and crisp) photographs.
Photographs with higher resolution can more easily be reprinted into large formatted high definition prints. That is why we include a scanning service as part of what we offer. When you order custom HD prints online, our scanners turn your photos into high-resolution images.
Our printing company is able to produce customized large format prints in HD because of our printers’ capacities. Whereas cameras and images are made up of pixels, the printer creates high definition canvas prints (also high definition plexi and acrylic prints) 3 different machines using a measurement called dpi (dots per inch). The higher the dpi, the higher is the definition of the reprint.
Our printers boast the highest dpi available. In plain language, that means the high definition giclée prints, wall murals, and the custom HD prints online that you order from us are crystal clear in their color and incredibly sharp in their appearance. When you take advantage of our printing service, you feel you are living in the moment of the photo. It's an extraordinary experience.
I still use my SLR camera for taking photographs. Do I have to switch to a digital camera to order your wallpaper murals and high definition giclée prints? We understand as artists why many people still love their film cameras. Rest assured you do not have to switch to a digital camera to order large format reproductions from us. We take your film, scan the negatives into digital images, and continue our regular printing process for large format prints in HD. So keep clicking away using your film camera and still get the customized HD prints you want.
What if I don't know how to tell what size my photos files are?You don't need to worry about not knowing the size of your photo file. We know that some folks have more technical knowledge than do others. We're here to help. Our online services include specialized software that will tell you if your photo file is too large. Chances are that it won't be.
Do you accept CD and/or DVD files? We provide scanning services when CD's or DVD's are sent. Make sure to include what you want done and all of your contact information so that we can get in touch with you about your order and confirm all the details.
How can I tell if the resolution of the photo I want you to reproduce for canvas printing is sharp enough? Our online software services will determine the resolution quality when you upload any digital photo for photo to canvas printing. Unlike the practices of some discount printing houses, if the resolution is too poor, we will contact you before we start working on your order. Some cheap canvas printing firms will complete your order without caring about the resolution of the original photo. We do care and we want you to be happy with your canvas print and with us.
Do you have on-staff artists who can "fix" a problem photograph?*Cheap canvas printing houses who sell canvas prints at a discount do not normally employ on-staff artists for custom work. If the resolution of your photo requires some boosting, or your subject has a bad case of red eye, or the exposure and/or contrast isn't exactly right, our computer-experienced artists will work to fix any problem*. Rest assured that your photo will not be sent straight to our large format printers for production without human intervention if we feel the photo will yield a poor canvas reprint. We will always contact you if we cannot fix a problem photograph.
*Enhancing photos or photoshop work may be billed by the hour upon approval from client

Artisan HD specializes in the giclée on canvas method. With its large format inkjet printers, we can transfer your artwork and photography projects into works of fine art.
Our giclée printing services are always in high demand because of their indisputable beauty. One of the reasons for this demand is that giclée canvas printing requires special light-fast inks. We use only the best quality inks, inks that highlight all of the shades, nuances, and hues of the color of the original digital photograph or painting.
When you order custom giclée prints online we expect you will be so pleased with your fine art reprint that our customer services department will refund your money if you are not 100% satisfied.

In the case of professionals, the original work can be multiplied in a limited run for sale purposes. This is very cost-effective for artists with limited budgets.
Giclée canvas printing allows photographers to reproduce their photographs onto a completely new medium, other than traditional photo paper. The results are astounding.
With giclée reprints, we can reproduce digital images to just about any size you want.
Giclée printing is a very affordable way to turn your work of art into a museum-like work.
Giclée works on canvas are very durable and under the right conditions last a long time.
The large format printers used to produce giclée prints work extremely fast and are capable of replicating thousands of prints in a short period of time.
"Buyer Beware" of Cheap Giclée Impersonators
Be careful from whom you order your giclée on canvas reprints as there are some very unscrupulous businesses online. They promise you a cheap giclée print and then mail you a print made on canvas paper. Canvas paper is made to replicate a canvas look but it is not made from the high quality poly-cotton canvas we use. Canvas paper is a linen derivative with an embossed finish.
When you place an online order, make sure that the company from whom you are ordering has large format inkjet printers, and not copy machines.
What is a "LightJet" printThe term "LightJet" is often used to generically describe a digitally made chromogenic print. Unexposed silver-halide (AgX) photographic paper is temporarily fixed on an internal drum, where three digitally controlled lasers simultaneously expose the photo-sensitive emulsion on the paper medium (or back-lit transparency medium) with red, green and blue laser light. The amount of light from each laser varies to provide specific color and density values for each pixel imaged to the print. The light-path includes a spinning surface coated mirror mounted on an air-bearing that travels along the axis of the internal drum, thus reflecting the laser light at 90 degrees allowing for a dimensionally consistent round imaging dot across the entire area of the photographic paper. The purpose of this round imaging dot is to maintain edge to edge sharpness on the final print. The print is then processed using traditional photochemical means. After which, the photographic print is handled just as any other photo-print.
Whereas xerography and inkjet printing employ a halftone process and ink to reproduce digital images on paper, digital-C is a photographic continuous tone process rather than halftone or error diffusion which are common on offset press or ink-jet.
Does your Lightjet printer apply any sharpening by default? If it does can it be turned off if requested?Yes, we run our LightJet with the sharpening feature ON as a default, however we can turn it off upon request.
Light Box Prints
What Is Backlit Photography?Backlit photography involves a film printing process that uniquely captures the color of photographs, artwork, or graphics when lit from behind with a special light source. Custom backlit photography uses a premium large format color, translucent polyester film, also known as a transparency. Our eco-friendly inks and inkjet printers, produce a high-definition, brilliantly colorful transparency that is simply beautiful.
I am not familiar with backlit prints and photos. Are they used for commercial displays?Even though you may not think you are familiar with backlit prints and photos, you probably have seen them used in commercial displays at airports, shopping malls, bus stops, in building lobbies and offices, and as window posters or photos.
Is backlit digital photo printing used just for retail displays?Backlit digital photo printing, though normally only used for retail displays in the past, are now available through Artisan HD for the individual consumer. You can now get backlit photograph prints of your personal photographs and artwork for use in your home or office. It is a brilliant way to decorate.
What kind of light process do you use to create your custom backlit photography? One way we create our custom backlit photography is using Duratrans™, Kodak’s large format, color transparency material fabricated to make large format graphics or posters for backlit displays. It is considered the finest transparency material available.
Duratrans prints have a digital resolution of up to 4,000 dpi (dots per inch) as compared to other materials with a maximum of 2,880 dpi. The results are truer, more vibrant colors, and sharp, crisp details. The Duratrans is printed on the LightJet. We do also print on backlit film on the Arizona 350 GT using the UV ink – 2 separate processes.
Our Arizona 350 GT inkjet printer uses a UV curable ink process, ensuring durable, long lasting, and fade-resistant prints.
What are LED Lit photos?LED stands for light-emitting diode. LED’s emit only one color of light, but when combined with other diodes, produces a large array of colors. These remarkable diodes have an incredibly long life.
Your special prints are backlit LED Lit photos. The combination of using special transparency film for printing and LEDs for the light source, offers you the finest high resolution, unique reprints of your favorite artworks, photographs and graphics.
Artisan HD is pleased to offer backlit photos for your personal use, or to give to someone as an extraordinary gift. We know you will be delighted with your purchase.
Do the lightbox prints include the actual Lightbox? The DuraTrans prints are always sold separately. If you are interested in purchasing a lightbox to hold your print, please call us toll-free at (877) 948-0009.
Why don't you show a "standard price list" ?We don't believe that any print should be "standard". We believe that every print is special and unique, so we won't limit you to "standard" sizes. Every single work of art that we create for you is created to your own unique "custom" size that you specifiy. Because of this dedication for creating works of art that are as unique as you are, a standard price list doesn't apply.
To get a price upload your image and configure it with the options you want and the price will be displayed as you build your custom work of art.
Can you ship prints overseas or out of the country?Currently we only ship orders within the United States.
