Photoshop has been an industry standard in image manipulation since its inception in 1990. Photoshop was developed with a variety of uses in mind for many different professions. It was not designed for photographers and their skill sets.

So as technology progressed and more photographers saw the advantages of manipulating their photos on the screen and not just in the darkroom, it became clear that Photoshop was more for all-purpose graphic design work.

Enter Lightroom in 2007! Adobe built a photo editing and photo file management program designed just for photographers.

So, Photoshop vs Lightroom – What are the differences? Which is better for photographers? Is there an advantage to using both?

Why Photographers Use & Love Lightroom

Compared to Photoshop, Lightroom is very purpose-driven. It’s designed to make common photographer tasks simpler and easy to execute at scale. Some perks of Lightroom include:

  • Photo file management: Easily organize photo files, better for cataloging and managing large photo libraries.
  • Simplified interface: Because it doesn’t have to have all of the Photoshop features, a streamlined interface is customized for photo editing tasks.
  • Non-destructive editing: Maintain the integrity of the original image file while making any necessary edits.
  • Better RAW file processing: Includes things like white balance adjustment, exposure compensation, highlight, and shadow recovery.
  • Batch editing & presets: Apply the same adjustment to multiple RAW files simultaneously.
  • Detailed adjustments: Fine-grained control over various aspects of RAW files, such as tone, color, and detail.

Lightroom seeks to solve many of the obvious problems photographers had with Photoshop.

What it lacks in overall features compared to Photoshop it makes up for in convenience and functionality. It’s great for people who just need photo editing without the extra graphic design elements as well as organizing large photo collections and performing quick edits.

Lightroom is the go-to choice for photographers who need to process many images efficiently without sacrificing quality.

Why Photographers Still Use & Love Photoshop

Lightroom has almost everything you’d need to finish the perfect photo, but not everything. For some photographers, there are features in Photoshop that Lightroom can’t match.

  • Pixel-level editing: Alter the color, brightness, and other qualities of an individual pixel in a photograph.
  • Layers: Supports complex edits with multiple layers and compositing.
  • Advanced tools: Provides advanced retouching and manipulation tools with greater capabilities.
  • Versatility: Can be used for graphic design or digital art on top of photo manipulation.

Photoshop has a steeper learning curve than Lightroom, however, once you get over the hump you’re able to edit photos at a more granular level. It’s best suited for projects requiring intricate edits, graphic design, or creating composites from multiple images.

Photoshop Vs. Lightroom: Why Not Both?!

Many photographers use Lightroom and Photoshop in tandem. Organizing and basic photo adjustments are done in Lightroom and if more detailed edits are necessary the image file is opened in Photoshop.

Combining the two allows you to leverage the best of both programs and ultimately produce better-quality photos. For most photographers, Lightroom is sufficient for the vast majority of editing needs but it’s hard to overlook the advanced editing capabilities of Photoshop.
