Cars are more than just a way to get from Point A to Point B—they’re a canvas for memories, adventure, stories, and artistic expression. From the curves of a classic vintage car to the gleaming finishes of a modern sports car, automotive design captures our imagination and reflects our cultural history.
For photographers, cars offer a unique opportunity to explore design, nostalgia, and storytelling all in one shot. Automotive photography blends technical skill with a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship and character of each vehicle.
In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the intersection of art and automobiles through the lens of photographer Paul Heinrich and the unique print medium that transformed one extraordinary photograph into a stunning work of art.
Artist Spotlight: Photographer Paul Heinrich
An Arizona native, born and raised in the Valley, Paul Heinrich discovered his passion for photography as a teenager. After stepping away during college, he returned to the craft with renewed enthusiasm, launching his own photography business primarily shooting for events, influencers, and businesses.
“What I enjoy the most about the type of photography I do is the work is very diverse,” shares Paul.
“One day, I could be shooting a wedding, a public speaking event, or covering an industry like cars. The next I could be up in trees documenting the felling processes of a local business or documenting someone else’s artwork and their process.”
Rather than specializing in one niche, Paul embraces the opportunity to capture life’s many facets, staying true to his origins as a curious and creative artist.
“I never wanted to specialize or be known for doing just one type of photography. I wanted to do photography in a way that stayed true to my origins, to explore creatively.”
“Sharing life through the eyes and labor of so many different professions and events has been an honor.”
It’s that passion and creativity that led Paul to capture the shot below at a automotive event.
The Emotional and Cultural Impact of Car Photography
“Cars are intimately intertwined with our lives,” Paul explains. They hold a special place in American culture and can evoke powerful emotions in all of us.
Think back to your childhood—was there a family car that became a part of your life’s story? They’re woven into the fabric of our lives, from long road trips with family to the first car you ever owned.
Automobiles are more than just objects; they become symbols of nostalgia, pride, and shared experiences.
Through photography, these connections are preserved and celebrated. Automotive photography captures the spirit of a car—its design, history, and role in our lives—and translates it into something lasting.
The Craftsmanship Behind Automotive Photography
The artistry behind automotive design—the seamless curves, intricate details, and gleaming finishes—is a testament to human ingenuity and precision. Capturing this craftsmanship in a photograph demands a similar level of skill and attention to detail.
Just as an engineer or designer painstakingly refines every aspect of a car’s construction, a photographer must carefully consider composition, lighting, and perspective to highlight the vehicle’s beauty and character.
Professional car photography requires precise lighting techniques to bring out its shape and details without distraction. Close-up shots of elements like the grill or wheels emphasize both functionality and form.
Similarly, printing these photographs as fine art pieces requires another layer of craftsmanship to enhance the composition, colors, and textures and bring the image to life.
Paul’s Passion Project
Paul was hired to photograph cars for an event, where he was given specific instructions to capture certain vehicles from specific perspectives. However, he was also encouraged to take additional photos using his own creative approach.
One car stood out to him. It was a beautiful, meticulously maintained vehicle. After spending time speaking with the owner, it became evident just how much care and pride the owner had invested in preserving it. This inspired Paul to capture the car in a way that honored its story and significance.
“I wanted to take a photo of this vehicle and edit it in a way that reflected the care and reverence he had for the car. I felt this photo in particular captured all elements that reflect our connection with cars.”
The Perfect Material for Automotive Photography Prints
While a great photograph starts with the right shot, selecting the right print medium adds depth and dimension, transforming the photograph into a true work of art.
Paul explains, “Having the photo in an electronic format was great, but I knew I always wanted to print this photo someday. However, if I were to print the photo, I wanted to do it on a medium that enhanced it even further.
My goal was to find a medium that would really make it pop with texture so I took a chance on the brushed aluminum Dibond print. It did not disappoint.”
Paired with the craftsmanship of print professionals, Dibond brushed aluminum adds amazing depth and vivid colors with rich contrasts to fine art prints.
Through the UV cured ink printing process, any areas of the image that are a true white will reveal the raw, brushed aluminum metal surface.
This medium is especially impactful for photographs featuring metallic surfaces, like automotive photography.
“The texture the brushed aluminum created is remarkable,” Paul remarks.
“When you see the print in person the image has a 3-D look to it, especially on the grill. You can’t help but want to touch it. The brushed aluminum adds an element of texture similar to what you would expect on a real piece of metal like a car. It is not perfectly polished, just as most things in reality are not, so the element of realism is escaping from the photo.”
